JOB SUMMARY
The Laboratory Technician is responsible for performing diagnostic testing and related laboratory duties in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Work Instructions (WIs), equipment manuals, and product specifications. The technician operates in a Controlled Work Area and utilizes a variety of tools, equipment, and chemicals, depending on the specific testing and processes involved.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct diagnostic laboratory tests and procedures to support patient care.
- Collect, label, prepare, and manage patient specimens and samples, ensuring proper handling and safe disposal.
- Clean, maintain, and calibrate laboratory equipment and apparatus to ensure optimal performance.
- Accurately record and maintain laboratory data, test results, and patient records in line with facility protocols.
- Manage inventory of laboratory supplies, including stock monitoring, ordering, and safe storage.
- Respond promptly to emergency calls and perform laboratory duties during emergencies.
- Work flexible shifts, including weekends or evenings, as needed to meet operational requirements.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to patient care, confidentiality, and high-quality customer service.
- Communicate effectively with healthcare professionals, patients, and team members.
- Perform any other related duties as assigned by the supervisor or facility management.
KEY REQUIREMENT SKILLS AND QUALIFICATION
- Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences
- Registered by Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians Technologist Board (KMLTTB)
- Previous work experience within the private sector is an added advantage
- Proficiency in computer packages & MS Excel is an as added advantage
- Knowledge of laboratory safety standards and practices
- Strong organizational and record-keeping skills
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Flexibility and responsiveness in high-demand situations
