DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Truss System Design and Engineering
- Develop accurate and efficient designs for timber and/or steel truss systems based on architectural and structural requirements.
- Conduct structural analysis to determine appropriate materials, load paths, connection details, and support conditions.
- Prepare detailed engineering drawings, layouts, and fabrication sheets using structural design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, MiTek, etc.).
- Ensure truss systems are compliant with local and international codes, safety standards, and engineering best practices.
- Optimize designs for cost-efficiency, ease of installation, and structural performance.
Structural Analysis and Technical Calculations
- Perform detailed calculations for load-bearing capacity, deflection, stress, and vibration of truss structures.
- Evaluate the impact of environmental loads such as wind, seismic forces, and live/dead loads on structural systems.
- Generate structural reports and documentation to support design decisions and for submission to regulatory bodies.
Project Coordination and Collaboration
- Work closely with architects, civil engineers, quantity surveyors, and contractors to integrate truss systems seamlessly into the overall building design.
- Participate in design review meetings, site coordination sessions, and project briefings.
- Resolve structural conflicts or design discrepancies through collaboration with stakeholders.
- Ensure timely delivery of truss drawings and documentation for project deadlines.
Site Support and Quality Assurance
- Visit project sites during installation to ensure proper handling and erection of truss systems as per design specifications.
- Conduct structural inspections and assessments during and after installation to verify compliance with design.
- Address and resolve technical issues arising on-site, making real-time adjustments where necessary.
Training and Technical Guidance
- Provide hands-on training and mentorship to junior engineers, technicians, and installation crews on truss system design and installation.
- Develop training materials, technical manuals, and standard procedures for in-house staff and site teams.
- Promote best practices in safety, material handling, and structural reliability across all project phases.
Documentation and Compliance
- Maintain up-to-date design files, calculations, and project documentation for future reference and auditing.
- Prepare structural engineering reports, method statements, and compliance documents as required by clients or regulatory authorities.
- Ensure all documentation meets internal quality standards and regulatory requirements.
Continuous Improvement and Innovation
- Stay updated with emerging trends, materials, and technologies in structural and truss engineering.
- Recommend innovative solutions to improve efficiency, reduce cost, and enhance structural integrity.
- Contribute to internal R&D efforts related to modular structures, prefabrication, and sustainable truss systems.
KEY REQUIREMENT SKILLS AND QUALIFICATION
- Degree or Diploma in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related field
- Minimum of 3 years of proven experience specializing in structural truss systems
- Strong understanding of timber and/or steel truss design, fabrication, and installation
- Proficiency in structural design software (e.g., AutoCAD, SAP2000, ETABS, STAAD.Pro, MiTek, etc.)
- Knowledge of relevant Kenyan Building Codes and international structural standards
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple projects concurrently
- Experience in training and mentoring technicians is an added advantage
