DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Livestock Management

  • Oversee all aspects of livestock care including feeding, breeding, housing, health, and welfare.
  • Monitor animal health daily and ensure timely intervention in cases of illness, injury, or unusual behavior.
  • Develop and implement schedules for vaccination, deworming, and disease prevention programs.
  • Supervise the breeding programs and maintain accurate records for lineage and productivity.
  • Ensure compliance with animal health and welfare standards, veterinary regulations, and biosecurity protocols.

Farm Operations

  • Manage farm staff involved in livestock rearing, assigning duties and monitoring performance.
  • Ensure cleanliness and sanitation of animal housing, feeding equipment, and surrounding environments.
  • Collaborate with agronomists or crop managers if integrated livestock-crop systems exist.
  • Plan and monitor livestock feeding regimens based on nutritional needs and availability of feed.

Record Keeping & Reporting

  • Maintain detailed and up-to-date records on livestock numbers, production levels, breeding cycles, health checks, and treatments administered.
  • Prepare regular reports on herd health, mortality, productivity trends, and farm inputs/outputs.

 

 

Resource Management & Procurement

  • Monitor and manage farm inputs such as feeds, veterinary supplies, and equipment.
  • Liaise with suppliers, veterinary officers, and government agencies on livestock issues.
  • Ensure proper maintenance and repair of livestock facilities and equipment.

Financial & Strategic Planning

  • Participate in budgeting, cost control, and financial planning for livestock operations.
  • Provide strategic input for livestock production improvements, new technology adoption, and farm expansion.
  • Analyze production data and identify areas for efficiency improvement or cost reduction.

KEY REQUIREMENT SKILLS AND QUALIFICATION

  • Degree or Diploma in Veterinary Medicine, Animal Health, Animal Production, or a related field
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in livestock farm management or a similar role
  • Proven track record in managing cattle, goats, or sheep in commercial settings
  • Strong knowledge of modern livestock production systems, disease control, nutrition, and breeding
  • Experience with farm management software is an added advantage
